Why do people stare?

Outside the main tourist circuits, a foreign face is simply unusual. Staring in Morocco doesn't carry the same social weight it does in Northern Europe or North America — it's observation, not confrontation. Children will stare openly, older men from café chairs, women from windows. A nod or a smile usually gets one back.
