Getting around Morocco — how transport works, what to expect on arrival, and why your taxi can't take you to the door.
- Can I bring dirhams into the country?No. The dirham is a closed currency — you can only get it inside Morocco.
- How much cash should I bring?Plan for €30–60 a day in cash, on top of card spending.
- Do I need a SIM card or eSIM?Yes. Pick up a Maroc Telecom SIM at the airport for about 50 MAD.
- Do I need a visa?Probably not — over 70 nationalities get 90 days visa-free on arrival.
- Why can't my taxi take me to the door?Riads are nestled in car-free zones of the medina.
- What is the tourist tax?A government levy (taxe de séjour) of approximately €2.50 per person per night.
- Is there a ride-hailing app?inDrive is the most widely used. Uber relaunched in late 2025.
- How do I get a petit taxi to use the meter?Say compteur before the car moves.
- What's the difference between petit and grand taxis?Petit taxis are city-only and metered. Grand taxis are intercity and shared.
- How do trains work?ONCF runs everything. Al Boraq is Africa's only high-speed rail.
- How do buses work?Two names: Supratours and CTM.
- What plugs do they use?Type C and E — same as France.
